When you hear the phrase, 'The fundamentals are fundamental,' the response is often unanimous: 'Of course they are!' Every sport—from basketball to chess—revolves around mastering core fundamentals that pave the way from basics to expertise.
Golf is no exception. But if these fundamentals are the bedrock for improvement and are no secret, why aren't they posted everywhere at practice facilities?
Harvey Penick, the revered golf instructor of multiple major winning golfers, emphasizes that better chipping and putting is the swiftest path to better scores. He advises newcomers to start at the green, and then move backward—transitioning from short shots to progressively longer ones. Yet, many driving ranges are ill-equipped for chipping practice; worse still, they often PROHIBIT it by the putting green! If the goal is to genuinely aid golfers in enhancing and improving their game, facilities should be structured around the game's pivotal aspects.
Consider if two-thirds of the facility would cater to the short game, offering varied terrains and conditions, while the remaining third could serve as a driving range for full shots.
Novel. Radical. Necessary.
